Industry:
Immigration advice for employers and migrants

What makes your family business unique?
We have supported hundreds of Kiwi businesses to employ the skilled migrants they need to keep their businesses thriving. We work hard to take our client’s worries away, we want them to feel confident and excited about recruiting from overseas. Immigration policies are more complex now than ever and we are committed to ensuring businesses have the right information.

How many generations are currently in your family business?
Just one generation so far! The Directors of NZ Visa Connections are sisters, Helen and Rebecca Strange. In the past we have worked in our family’s hospitality, construction and service businesses and we both have a professional background as social workers. This gives us a unique perspective of the needs of employers whilst being able to provide a supportive, warm service to our clients.

How long have you been an FBA Member and what’s the key benefit/advantage of your FBA membership?
We are new members and are excited about the chance to learn more about the challenges family businesses face and how to meet them. In particular, the peer to peer forums look great.

What piece of advice you would offer another family business?
When we first started work together we wrote a rough manifesto which detailed how we would work with each other. As well as expectations about hours, money and standards we agreed how we would treat each other and what we would do when conflicts arose. Just putting this on paper was useful. Now we have a shareholders agreement, insurance and other formal policies but that first document was probably the most useful thing we could have done.
